Another first African-American accomplishment, being the
first attempt at a history of the military experience of the
African-American. Brown (1814-1884) wrote the first
play (“the Escape” 1858) by an African-American, as well
as the first travel book (“Three Years in Europe,” 1852)
and first novel (“Clotel,” 1853). This volume was pub-
lished by Brown and his wife.
