Martin

Robinson Delany, (1812-1885) was a tremen-

dously complex and talented man. Editor,

author, physician, explorer, abolitionist and

pan-Africanist, in 1858-1859, Delany was

part of an ambitious colonization plan to

explore the Niger Valley in Africa to find suit-

able land to settle American slaves and

freedmen. The exploratory expedition was

made, and agreements with local Abeokuta

chiefs as well. However Civil War at home,

and a reluctant British Parliament essentially

quashed the project.
