Henry Jones was a member of the noted 54th
Regiment, the first African-Americans to see combat in the Civil War. The first assault on the Morris
Island, SC battery known as Fort Wagner took place on July 10th 1863. Jones paid for the printing
and publication of this piece of music. He probably had an arrangement not unlike that of the modern
“vanity” publishers.

(MILITARY—CIVIL WAR.) SHERMAN, WILLIAM T.
Sherman’s March to
the Sea.

x 28) mounted to a large piece of thick
cardstock; faint 7 inch vertical crease to top right.
Hartford, CT: F.O.C. Darley, Published by Willis, 1883
[400/600]
A striking engraving of Sherman’s famous (infamous) March to the Sea. Sherman is reviled in the South
for burning a path through the deep South, in what would be called a “scorched earth” policy today.
