Henry Jones was a member of the noted 54th

Regiment, the first African-Americans to see combat in the Civil War. The first assault on the Morris

Island, SC battery known as Fort Wagner took place on July 10th 1863. Jones paid for the printing

and publication of this piece of music. He probably had an arrangement not unlike that of the modern

“vanity” publishers.

A striking engraving of Sherman’s famous (infamous) March to the Sea. Sherman is reviled in the South

for burning a path through the deep South, in what would be called a “scorched earth” policy today.
