California: Black Panther Party:
20 December, 1969 through
28 July, 1975
[8,000/12,000]
A large and unusually rich run of the official
organ of the Black Panther Party. Includes a
number of the “Supplements” and centerfold
posters, for the most part created by Emory
Douglas, the Panthers’ Minister of Information.
In 1968 and 1969, membership in the Party
grew, as did confrontations with the police.
During this time the Panthers stepped up their
activities within the black community, institut-
ing sickle-cell testing, and free lunches. At the
same time, the FBI stepped up their infiltration
of the group, and violent confrontations became
more and more common.
This group of 183 issues of the Black Panther
Paper provides a rare opportunity to read week by
week, day by day the history of the Panther Party
as it unfolded, from the voices of its own writers.
