These voyages were made in order to ascertain the advisability of Spanish ships continuing to

use the passage of the Strait of Magellan in voyages to the Pacific. . . . After these expeditions,

the Spanish trade routes were exclusively to east coast ports and then overland to Pacific

Jesuit mission at Guam, east of the

Philippines. Father Monroy was martyred in

1686, in retaliation for a Chamorro chief who

had been executed by the Spanish. Palau

traced at auction.
