Elliott had made a name for himself before the Second World War designing posters for the London
Underground and Imperial Airways. His enduring contribution to the world of graphic design was the
creation of the “speedbird” logo he created for Imperial Airways, and which went on to be used by the
British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), continually appearing on the fuselage of planes in
their fleet through 1984. This is the English version. The image also appeared on the cover of an
