British Airways was formed by the conglomeration of several smaller airlines in 1935. In 1939 it was
nationalized and merged with Imperial Airways to form the British Overseas Airline Corporation.
Lee-Elliott’s design of the winged lion logo for the airline did not last long past the merger, as the
Speedbird became the universal symbol of the new company.
