When Havinden, a well-known gourmand, designed this poster he might well have been remembering
some of the great seafood meals he ate at Maison Prunier. This poster is a tribute to Cassandre’s image
for the renowned fish restaurant. In this instance, however, it is fish sauce levitating above the table
with a white table cloth and not the fish itself.

Renowned British designer Alan Fletcher was a founding partner in Fletcher, Forbes Gill in the early
1960s and helped provided sophisticated advertising to such important clients as Reuters, Pirelli,
Olivetti and Penguin Books. In the following decade, Fletcher was one of the founders of Pentagram,
and then went on to start his own company. He was also one of the founding members of The Design
and Art Directors Association. For their 21st anniversary, he pays tribute to one of the great advertising
icons of the 20th century (Cassandre’s Dubonnet man) and adds Popeye-like biceps to the figure,
suggesting the incredible strength that advertising can carry.
