Isaac Plumb (1808-1896) was an officer in the 45th Brigade of the New York Militia. His
duty was to ensure that every able-bodied man in his ward either turned out for militia drills or
paid the fine. This unusual volume gives the names of 2458 men arranged by address, along
with Plumb’s notes upon visiting several hundred of them. Many of these notes are of biograph-
ical or genealogical interest. Most commonly he notes a new local address; sometimes a man has
removed south or west, or, like Ebenezer W. Fitch, has “gone to Jamaica, W.I. for health.”
Sometimes a man’s age is noted, presumably for somebody too old for militia duty. William H.
Thorne is noted as “crippled, broken back.” Nicholas Sturger is “alien, came to this country
May last.” Henry Green was apparently exempted when marked as “Negro.” The addresses
extend from Broadway to the east, south of Houston—a large swath of downtown Manhattan.
