Collected both for its attractive plates and important historical content. Including contributions
by Jefferson Davis and George B. McClellan, who would soon gain greater fame on opposite
sides in the Civil War. “A monumental collection of scientific information, geographical,
zoological, botanical, geological, of the still mysterious American West”—Wagner-Camp, page

(RAILROADS.) Rockwell, John A.
Canal or Railroad between the Atlantic
and Pacific Oceans.
16 folding maps. 8vo, contemporary calf, worn; maps crisp and fresh
but difficult to open because of binding; library label on front cover, inked library stamps
on edges and first page. 30th Congress, 2nd Session, House Report 145, bound with
5-page “Index to House Reports” as issued.
Washington, 1849
[1,000/1,500]
Most notable for including the second issue of an important 1846 map by Charles Preuss in
seven sheets: “Topographical Map of the Road from Missouri to Oregon.” This issue lacks the
Baltimore lithographer’s imprint, but is otherwise the same map discussed at length in Wheat’s
Transmississippi West: “Owing to its rarity . . . Preuss’s sectional map of 1846 has been insuf-
ficiently appreciated by students of Western history” (523, pages III:25-29). Sabin 72432.
