In the 1930s, Frank Pick (the CEO of the

London Passenger Transport Board) decided

to use the Charing Cross Station ticket hall as

an exhibitions space. Kauffer designed a large

photographic mural for the area, and “Pick

also commissioned him to design posters and

car-cards publicizing the new exhibition

centre” (Kauffer p. 66). Accomplished in the

New Typography style, this was also one of

Kauffer’s earliest uses of photomontage in a

poster for the London Underground.
