Condition A- / A: minor tears and creases at edges; unobtrusive horizontal fold. Paper.

From 1936-1939, during the Spanish Civil War, Franco and his army were supported by the larger

fascist regimes of Europe, specifically Germany and Italy. The Republican forces, hoping to spark

support both within Spain and around the world, initiated a mighty propaganda effort and released

hundreds of posters championing various aspects of their cause. Designed in a direct style, using a

modernistic and graphic vocabulary, many of them also employed photography. Palette p. 121,

Carteles 445, p. 268, Berman p. 101.

x22 inches, 80x56 cm. Ministerio de Propaganda, Spain.

Condition A-: minor tears at edges; minor creases and abrasions in margins and image and along vertical

and horizontal folds. Paper.

From the photograph by the famous war photographer Robert Capa, this is one of the most striking

posters created to rally support for the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War. Similar in color scheme

and theme to Picasso’s

Guernica

painted the same year, this black-and-white photomontage of a mother

and child crouching in terror underneath a sky filled with Nazi bombers ask the question, “What are you

doing to prevent this?” Printed in Spanish, French and English, this propaganda poster acts as a sobering

reminder of how the atrocities of war often harm the most innocent. This is the Spanish version. Palette
