EXTRAORDINARY FRONT COVER
and copi-
ous illustrations from photographs etc. 32
pages. Folio, original pictorial wrappers;
lightly rubbed; small (1 x 2 inch) piece of
paper affixed to the rear cover.
Washington: Sepia Sports, 1944
[800/1,200]
A VERY NICE COPY OF AN EXTREMELY
RARE NEGRO LEAGUES ITEM
.
The front cover
features a photo of pitcher Spoon Carter wind-
ing up for a pitch. Superimposed behind him is
a photo of a Negro soldier winding up to toss a
grenade. This wartime magazine features an
article giving the chronological history of the
Negro Leagues, a feature on “East West Game
History,” “Is Senator Chandler Just Talking?
“Grays Win 1944 World Championship,”
and much more. As far as we could determine,
1944 was the only year the “Pictorial
Yearbook” was produced. OCLC locates only
one copy at the Denver Public Library.

Los Angeles: Foster Photo Play, 1932
[750/1,000]
The 1932 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the X Olympiad, was a major world
wide multi-athletic event which was celebrated in 1932 in Los Angeles, CA. No other cities made a
bid to host these Olympics. Held during the worldwide Great Depression, many nations and their
athletes were unable to pay for the trip to Los Angeles. Fewer than half the participants of the 1928
Summer Olympics in Amsterdam returned to compete in 1932. Even President Hoover skipped the
event. We could find no obvious connection with the Foster Photo Play Corporation, and this broad-
side of African American track stars, but William D. Foster (1884-1940) was responsible for some of
the earliest all black company films. Foster’s 1912 Film “The Rail Road Porter” is considered the
first all black cast film. It is possible that Foster was planning some sort of film based on the games.
Track star Eddie Tolan was among the medal winners, as was Ralph Metcalf.
