Scott Joplin (1868-1917), together with Arthur Marshall and a handful of others created an entirely
new musical form. “Rag time,” with its syncopation, was a sharp departure from music that for the
most part depended on a strict 3/4 time, for the waltz, or 4/4 and 2/4 for songs, dances, parades and
everything else. Joplin, who died at the age of 49, wrote some forty-four rags, a ballet and two operas.
