Robert Bogle, was an African American caterer and undertaker, and a fixture in Philadelphia’s old
free black community. He was in such demand that it would not be unusual for him to lead a funeral
procession in the afternoon, and officiate at a lavish dinner in the evening. Nicholas Biddle, a scion of
Philadelphia’s high society celebrated Bogle’s talents in this “Ode,” first published in 1865. Featured
in the Library Company of Philadelphia’s 1503-1903 Exhibition catalogue #155 with the follow-
ing comment: “The Gentler nature waits on all/ When parties rage, on you they call.”
