[1,000/1,500]
The Tiger Oil and Gas Corporation was founded by a group of black investors around 1937. In
1938 the company obtained a 160 acre lease near Oil City and began drilling. By the following year
they had 16 wells working. Investors included F.W. Williams, Miss Martha McClinton, Dr. E.L.
Dickson, Dr. R.T. Nelson, and a half dozen more prominent Shreveport businessmen and women.
The photograph of the investors before their first well and that of the stockholders’ meeting no doubt
include these names. The Tiger Oil Company appears to be still in business in Shreveport.

East Denver Directory of Business and
Citizenry, 1950-1951 (2nd Edition).
Illustrated. 106, [1]-160 pages. Small 8vo, original
pictorial wrappers; lightly rubbed.
Denver, 1950
[400/600]
One of the nicest directories we have ever handled. Divided in two distinct sections, the first lists
Denver’s black businesses; the second part its “Citizenry.” Among the latter are Denver’s oldest male
and female residents: Mrs. Clara Davis, 93 years old and Mr. Henry L. Hall, 111 years old.
