FIRST EDITION OF THIS VERY SCARCE BEAUTY MANUAL

,

issued by the Madam Walker School.

The original owner of this book, Elizabeth Montgomery of Independence, MO, a student of the

Walker School, has written a “Marcel Poem,” on the blank leaf preceding the title-page. It doesn’t

quite rhyme, but it sets down the various steps involved in Marceling, a process of straightening and

waving black hair.
