THE EDISON DIET

75

EDISON, THOMAS A. Typed Letter Signed, “Thos A Edison,” to Simon

Goldstein, explaining that his own diet is not that of a strict vegetarian, noting that his diet

helps to protect himself from our malignant environment, and requesting that this informa-

tion not be published. 1 page, 4to, “From the Laboratory” stationery; ink collector’s stamp

verso (“Dr. Max Thorek”), folds. (TFC)

Orange, NJ, 28 July 1913

[1,500/2,500]

. . . I am not a strict vegetarian. I am an extremely small eater, and eat just enough to keep

my weight constant and to prevent putrefaction in the lower intestine. Of the small amount of

animal food I do eat, it is cooked at rather high temperature. I eat no lettuce, celery or fruits

except those with heavy rind.

We all live in a malignant environment, and I try to protect myself against it as far as my

knowledge permits me to do so.

Please consider this as a personal letter and not for publication.”
