Tracks the appearances of the Virgin Mary throughout Mexico. “A work of considerable

importance for the ecclesiastical history of Spanish North America. . . . The details are narrated

with great fullness, with names, dates, and circumstances, with authorities and bibliographical

citations”—Stevens 2545. The Our Lady of Guadalupe print affixed to the verso of the title

page was done by José Benitez Ortuño in Mexico in 1763. Medina, México 4246; Palau

Miguel Mateo Maldonado y Cabrera (1695–1768) was the great Mexican painter of his era. The

Maravilla Americana was his influential work on Our Lady of Guadalupe, in which he analyzed

the materials used in the painting and concluded that it was of divine origin. Not known at auction

since the Phillipps copy in 1986. Medina, México 4310; Palau 38865; Sabin 9812.
