(MEXICO—1755.) Eguiara y Eguren, Juan José.

Biblioteca Mexicana sive

eruditorum historia virorum.

Engraving at the head of page 1. [164], 543, [1] pages,

including duplicates of the half-title and title page. Folio, early tree calf, minor wear; long

closed tear on first half-title; title page in red and black.

México: Published by the author, 1755

[2,000/3,000]

An attractive and well-preserved copy of the first Mexican bibliography, listing numerous works

which have since been lost. it served as the basis for Beristain’s later work. Eguiara’s practice of

translating all Spanish titles into Latin makes it rather awkward for practical daily use by the

modern cataloguer, as does the arrangement by first name rather than surname. This volume

includes authors from A through C; no other volumes were ever published. Medina, México

4239; Palau 78641 (“raro en comercio”); Sabin 22060 (“rare and valuable”). One other

copy known at auction.
