Not generally known, Marcus Garvey was a
rather prolific writer of poetry. The U.N.I.A.
and The Negro World published “Selections
from the Poetic Mediations of Marcus Garvey
in 1927, and “The Tragedy of White
Injustice” in the same year.

A VERY SCARCE BROADSIDE INVITING THE PEOPLE OF NEW JERSEY TO HEAR THE
BLACK LEADER SPEAK
.
Garvey had specifically come to New Jersey to address her Negro citi-
zens. Just three weeks earlier, thousands of Klan members had descended on the nearby
community of Hamilton, and this presented an ideal opportunity to show black unity and
strength. At this time, Garvey was actually on parole and doing his best to put the issue of the
Black Star Line behind him, and retain his support in the black community.
