In 1943, the British War Office staged a huge show on Oxford Street, on the spot where the John Lewis
department store had been bombed. Organized by the Ministry of Information, the outdoor exhibition
contained over150,000 different military items, from heavy ordinance to uniforms. It’s purpose was
to “give the public a general idea of how the army was organized, explaining communications, food,
transport, munitions and medical services” (The Festival of Britain p. 38). Although the poster is
unsigned, Henrion was very much involved in designing the exhibition, including its logo, which can
be seen in many photographs of the event. IWM PST 4945.
