“Wrigley’s Doublemint gum was first produced in 1914. Throughout its long history, twins have been
used to advertise the product . . . [this poster was] created as part of a billboard campaign by Otis
Shepard, who worked as the art director of the Wrigley Company from 1932 until 1962. His airbrush
technique, economy of line, and clean modern design made Otis Shepard one of America’s premier
poster designers”

While this image appears to be the work of Otis Shepard, it cannot be, as the artist worked exclusively
for the Wrigley Gum company from 1932 through the 1960s. What is certain, however, is that both
the typography and design show that the artist was familiar not only with Shepard’s style, but also
certain progressive design tenets from Europe. This Mild and Mellow milk chocolate was added to the
line of Hershey products in 1934, but production was reduced with the rationing of sugar during
WWII
(Hersheyarchives.org).
