AN UNCOMMON IMAGE OF A MIXED COUPLE

While certainly not unheard of, interracial mar-

riages were no doubt unusual. “Miscegenation,” or mixing of the races was considered socially

unacceptable, if not unthinkable in much of the North as well as the South, until relatively more

recent times.
