After the Civil War, a number of choral groups sprang up, and were very popular. Best known was the

Jubilee Singers from Fisk who preformed work-songs from the field and sacred songs from church. The

present group, the Carolina Singers fashioned themselves after the Fisk group and were also quite popular.
