Year 1819.

subsequent. Small 32 pages. 8vo, original
self-wrappers with woodcut vignette on
the cover and one additional cut inside;
some light general wear; paper evenly
toned.

”Died at Westport, Massachusetts, on the 7th
day instant, Paul Cuffe, a very respectable man
of colour, in the 59th year of his age. A descen-
dant of Africa, he overcame by native strength
of mind, and firm adherence to principle, the
prejudice with which her descendants are too
generally viewed.” An obituary full of praise for
Cuffe, citing his three voyages to Sierra Leone
and his mercantile successes. Cuffe was half
Wampanoag, a Quaker and supporter of colo-
nization in Sierra Leone.
