Condition B+: minor repaired tears, creases and overpainting at edges; minor abrasions in lower image.

Unlike the other posters in Waugh’s series for the National Parks, this bold, modernist poster differs

in the manner in which it was printed. The gray areas on the geometrically rendered skier and in the

image have been created using a photo-offset process. Her other posters were all created by letterpress.

Condition A- / B+: tear at bottom edge, into image; minor creases and restoration in margins and image.

Dorothy Waugh studied design at the Chicago Institute of Art, then moved to New York where she

managed Alfred A. Knopf ’s children’s book department. During the 1930s, she worked for the

National Park Service as production supervisor and also provided them with actual artwork and copy.

There are at least eight known images which she designed for the National Parks and each is marked

by a unique treatment of typography and bold graphics. Crouse p. 291.
