“VERILY, HISTORY DOES REPEAT ITSELF”

212

TRUMAN, HARRY S.Typed Letter Signed, as President, to Frank Glenn, thank-

ing him for his gift of a Blaeu map, and noting that the map’s emphasis upon Asia and the

Near East is appropriate today. 1 page, 4to,White House stationery; horizontal fold. With

the original envelope. (TFC)

Washington, 20 September 1951

[300/400]

I am more grateful than you will ever know for the gift of that map by Wille[m] Blaeu, the

famous Dutch cartographer.

Three centuries have elapsed since Blaeu made his map and world boundaries have changed

many times in that period. But the focus of world attention is again on Asia and the Near

East—the very area which Blaeu indicated with such an artistic touch. Verily, history does

repeat itself.”
