I believe we all began our work with greater confidence on March 4, 1933, as a result of the
private service which a group of us attended at St. John’s Church . . . .
“
. . . I think this is a custom that should be kept up and I hope you and Mrs. Hines can be
with us at St. John’s next Friday morning at 10:30 o’clock.”
On March 4, 1933, President-Elect Roosevelt began a tradition of attending a private service
prior to inauguration at St. John’s Church in Lafayette Square,Washington; the tradition is main-
tained by presidents-elect to the present day. In addition to attending the pre-inaugural service on
March 4, 1937, Roosevelt attended services on the anniversaries of that date through 1945.
