The only work on California published by the Dominicans”—Bancroft, History of the North
Mexican States, page I:727. A descriptive work, with much on the Indians and the missionary
activities of the Dominicans after the expulsion of the Jesuits. It also contains an important
report on the dispute between the British and Spanish at Nootka Sound off Vancouver Island.
It was mostly written at the San Miguel mission in the northern part of Baja California, and
