This large-scale drawing is an excellent, example ofWhitfield Lovell’s combining of iconic imagery
and portraiture. The artist first created large-scale drawings in charcoal and oil stick during his
Skowhegan residency in 1985.With this 1994-1996 series, he received a prestigious grant from the
Joan Mitchell Foundation in 1996, and went on to have his first solo exhibition at DC Moore
Gallery in 1997.
