Untitled (Head of aWoman)

is a wonderful example of a unique work from Elizabeth Catlett’s mid-career

period.Works in oil - paintings and monotype - by Elizabeth Catlett are very

scarce.We

have located or

found records of less than a dozen other paintings in private collections - most are small portraits in oil

from her 1940s NewYork period. In the later

Untitled (Head of aWoman)

, we have a fascinating and very

rare moment of experimentation within the oil medium by Catlett.A sculptural quality can be found in

the various mark-making and the flattening of the forms - similar to her iconic linoleum cut,

Sharecropper

,

circa 1952.This is the first unique work on paper by the artist from the 1950s that we have located.
