Group of 60 commercial photographs relating to the 7-year-long expansion of this NewYork state
canal system, comprising 23 by A.L. Russell that were shot in the summer of 1910, with fascinating
depictions of large-scale industrial improvements, including dredging and excavation operations,
laborers at work, close-ups of heavy machinery, and miscellaneous views of the completed system
five years later. Silver prints, 6x8 inches (15.2x20.3 cm.), 31 are mounted to linen or cotton, with
Russell’s signature and date, in ink, on recto, and many with typewritten caption information on
mount recto 1910-17

many by Robert P. Sherman, who was a
member of an American merchant family
with business interests in the Philippines.The
album begins with a series of snapshots of a
fleet in Manila, transitions to family images in
Marblehead, Massachusetts, returns to the
Philippines, and then alternates between
recreational snaps in the U.S. and scenes in
the Philippines, including many pictures on
board various vessels (the S.S. Manchuria,
Kioto,Tenyo Maru, and others), in China, and
along the Pasig River, a trip up the Grand Canal, in which “himself ” is depicted. Silver prints, 3x4
