Begun in 1924, the celebration of Old Spanish Days in Santa Barbara was created to generate more
tourist interest in the region during the summer months. It is a celebration of the area’s Mexican and
Hispanic heritage. Roy Lawhorne was a commercial artist based in Santa Barbara who spent ten years
as Art Director for Seaside Gasoline (based in Summerland, California, just south of Santa Barbara),
designing their advertising and calendars.
