on the title-page. According to Wobbe, “...the novel was written under circumstances
not unlike those surrounding his earlier books. He was still not out of debt to the publisher and
his novels were not yet bringing in enough money to live on.” It is not unreasonable then to
speculate that the number of proofs Heinemann distributed were relatively low. A scarce advance
copy of one of the high points of Greene’s oeuvre. Wobbe, p. 42.
