Forster’s forward for Alec Craig’s 1937 publica-
tion The Banned Books of England (London:
George Allen & Unwin, 1937). He approv-
ingly discusses Craig’s book and in the course of
the essay mentions several notorious obscenity
trials and banned books, including Ulysses,
Havelock Ellis, the “Sexual Impulse case,” and
the “uncertain justice” implicit in censorship of
this kind, using Lawrence’s Seven Pillars of
Wisdom as an example of how “sometimes a
book gets through [the censors].”
