In building their empire, the British government had laid more than 160 thousand miles of undersea
cables for communication. With the encroaching technologies of radio they feared losing dominance
in the field, and so, by act of Parliament in 1929, they combined the cable companies with the new
wireless companies. The result in 1930 was, in effect, a monopolistic entity, The Imperial and
International Communications Company. The company was situated in the Electra House in
Moorgate, and was the communications hub for the entire Empire. The company changed its name
to Cable and Wireless Ltd. in 1934.
