was also a professor at Vienna’s School of Decorative Art. Together with Josef Hofmann he co-founded
the
Weiner Werkstatte
and was a versatile and prolific artist in his own right. Book design, graphic
design, interior design, jewelry, furniture, silverware, fashion and ceramics were just some of the fields
in which he worked. Much of his graphic work was done on behalf of the Secession and his commer-
cial posters are quite rare. One of several variations, this poster was first printed in 1899 in a smaller
size, without the bottom line of text nor the image of the bottle itself. Denscher p. 138 (var).

The first International Poster exhibition orga-
nized by the Secession was held in 1912. It was
comprised of works from the collections of two
avid art enthusiasts: Ottokar Maschka, who
wrote the preface to the catalogue, and Otto
Pollak. The exhibition contained 357 posters
(twenty of which are reproduced here in black
and white), as well as some original studies for
posters and architectural drawings. Harlfinger’s
design for the cover of the catalogue was also
used on the poster for the exhibition. The
poster and this catalogue are often misdated
1913 (the correct date is 1912). Denscher p. 54
(var), Modern Poster p. 69 (var).
