Lot 114: Dorothea Lange, Migrant Mother, silver print, 1936. Estimate $100,000 to $150,000.

A range of exciting photographs includes a vintage 1936 example of Dorothea Lange’s iconic Migrant Mother from the personal collection of the legendary Romana Javitz, who developed the New York Public Library’s Picture Collection. We are also privileged to be offering an early example of Ansel Adams’s Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, 1941, printed 1960s.

We also feature Edward S. Curtis’ stunning orotone Prayer to the Stars, 1908; a male nude by Peter Hujar as well as his study Himself, 1981; Robert Adams’ restrained A backyard, view of Pike’s Peak, Colorado, 1968-71; and Max Dupain’s evocative Sunbaker, 1937; printed 1970s. Contemporary highlights include Kenro Izu’s Pak Ou Cave #18, Luang Prabang, Laos, 1997; printed 2000, and Richard Mosse’s Damascus, 2008. Early highlights include Julia Margaret Cameron’s Florence, 1872, and a large, stunning George H. Seeley Portrait of a woman with flowers, 1918. As always, our sale also features uncommon material such as the well-known portrait of Helen Gee by Arthur Lavine, and fine art work by important, but underrepresented practitioners such as Godfrey Frankel and William Heick.
