Rey showing Curious George, from the first appearance of the children’s icon, leads a section that also boasts Eric Carle’s insatiable insect, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. One will also find adventure, fairytale, and forest images by Harold Gaze and Dorothy Lathrop, as well as contemporary artists Jerry Pinkney and Diane Stanley. Among works by Ludwig Bemelmans are two colorful illustrations from Madeline in London, which was the artist’s final Madeline work. Art by Maurice Sendak includes a graphite sketch of dancing mice from The Nutcracker, and a lively color illustration of Little Bear, from a 2001 revival of the artist’s collaboration with Else Holmelund Minarik. The cartoon, which touches on racial dynamics, was created and inscribed by artist Garry Trudeau to psychologist, educator, and civil rights activist Kenneth B. Clark.
