African American Art: October 6, 2022 Auction Highlights

**Lot 65:** Norman Lewis, *Untitled (Abstraction in Orange),* oil on canvas, 1967. Estimate $400,000 to $600,000.

Our October 6th African American Art auction features an outstanding group of abstract paintings led by the excellent 1967 Untitled (Abstraction in Orange) by Norman Lewis—the large canvas comes from a vibrant series depicting abstracted jazz musicians. The sale also features significant abstraction from the late 1960s to the 1990s by Charles Alston, Romare Bearden, Sam Gilliam and Hale Woodruff.

**Lot 66**: Hale Woodruff, *Landscape*, oil on canvas, 1967. Estimate $150,000 to $250,000.

Among Figurative paintings is an important 1970 oil by Cliff Joseph, Rise People Rise, and several paintings by Hughie Lee-Smith. Contemporary work includes a quilt by Bisa Butler, assemblage by Noah Purifoy, and Winfred Rembert’s tooled leather paintings.
