JEAN DUBUFFET
Dame au parc.
Color pencils, crayon, felt-tip pen and ink and collage on Arches, 1974. 355x255 mm; 14x9 7/8 inches. Initialed and dated in pencil, upper right recto. From the Récits series of drawings.
Provenance: Pace Gallery, New York, with the label; Estate of Bruce Cohen, Washington, D.C.; thence by descent to current owner.
Published: Catalogue des travaux de Jean Dubuffet: Crayonnages, Récits, Conjectures, Les Editions de Minuit, Paris, 1979, page 20, number 32.
With his Récits series (1974-1975), Dubuffet presents simplified vignettes of daily life, amidst frenzied lines and colors. The result is captivating and meant to transport the viewer to a carefree realm of freedom where the familiar is suspended. Dubuffet (1901-1985) explored these ideas in his earlier works, though revisited the concept in early September 1974. In a whirlwind of output between September and October, Dubuffet completed 150 works on paper by first drawing loose organic lines with black felt-tip pen, then cutting, reassembling, and gluing them to form complete compositions. The current drawing, the 105th of the Récit series, was created on September 9, 1974.
