GIUSEPPE PENONE
Il libro dei verdi del bosco.
Frottage with chlorophyll on six pieces of muslin cloth mounted on a wood branch, 1987. 695x1170 mm; 27 3/8x46 1/8 inches (overall). Signed, dated and numbered 2/7 in felt-tip pen and ink on the fifth panel.
Provenance: Galerie Durand-Dessert, Paris; private collection, New York.
Penone (born 1947) is an Italian artist and sculptor, born in Garessio. During his long career, he has become a leading Arte Povera artist, and has explored a variety of media. Penone's early perfomance works involved the natural degradation of his small man-made structures and objects placed in the forests near Garessio. Penone continued creating and performing works encompassing the natural world throughout his career. The current work was created using chlorophyll as ink printed on and mounted with natural materials. Recalling Penone's earlier exploration of natural deterioration, this multiple transforms raw materials into a meditation on the essence of the medium and ultimately, impermanance.
