Watercolor on thin wove paper, circa 1880s. 178x267 mm; 7x10 inches. Initialed in watercolor, lower left.
Inscribed “Barn no longer stands…; Bridgewater, NH, Road opposite Fowler … Foster Place; Second place after treetops ” in pencil, (probably another hand) upper right on the backboard.
Provenance: private collection, Florida.
This charming watercolor is a very scarce work from one of Edward Bannister's sketchbooks. He recording the scenery of the White Mountains of New Hampshire on sketching trips through the 1880s.
Anne Louise Avery, art historian and Edward Bannister expert, reviewed the work in 2021. She stated the 1880s work is “definitely from one of Bannister’s sketchbooks” and that “Bannister went on a number of sketching trips to the White Mountains, so absolutely the right subject matter.” The watecolor will be included in Avery's forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist.
