Anshutz (1851-1912) was a native of Kentucky and studied in Philadelphia with Thomas Eakins, whom he eventually succeeded as the director of drawing and painting classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Like Eakins, Ansutz painted in a naturalistic style that became more impressionistic over the course of his career. Numerous artists studied under Anshutz, including George Luks, Charles Demuth, John Sloan, Charles Sheeler, Everett Shinn, John Marin, William Glackens, and Robert Henri.
