The current work was used as an illustration for Nikolai Gogol's short story, A Madman's Diary. Evergood (1901-1973) illustrated an anthology of Gogol's works, Old Russian Stories, published by J. I. Rodale in 1951. The fictional account of the character, Poprishchin's descent into madness was written in 1835.
