Estimate: $ 5,000 - $ 7,000
RUPPERSBERG, ALLEN. The Singing Posters: Allen Ginsberg's Howl. Approximately 180 colored commercial advertising posters (1-132 comprising the poem, and approximately a further 50 examples apart from the poem). 14 x 22 inches; 360 x 560 mm. Printed by Colby Poster Printing Co., Los Angeles on flexible card stock; pinholes to blank corners, occasional smudge or minor blemish. Though a limitation is not indicated, it is believed the edition was limited to 30. "The Singing Posters is an homage to Allen Ginsberg and his famous poem, Howl (1955-1956). When Ruppersberg, who teaches at UCLA, discovered that his students had never heard of Howl, he conceived The Singing Posters as a way to introduce that important work to a new generation. For the installation Ruppersberg translated the poem into phonetic spellings and reintegrated them into the original text. The 'new' text is printed on approximately 200 vibrantly colored commercial advertising posters installed floor to ceiling on the gallery walls" (http://www.ricegallery.org/allen-ruppersburg). New York: Gorney, Bravin & Lee, 2003
