First edition in English, octavo, translated from the French original, Histoire du Gouvernement de Venise, by Lord Falconbridge (c. 1627-1700) [Oliver Cromwell's son-in-law]; title page is a cancel, final leaf Y4 blank and present, bound in later half parchment dyed a mottled brown, with blue paper-covered boards; early inked armorial ownership stamp of Henry Drax Esquire (c. 1693-1755) on verso of title page, some minor worming to inner (gutter) margin, 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 in.
Amelot was jailed in the Bastille for publishing this work critical of the Venetian political regime. The work was suppressed in France and notorious throughout Europe.
