WALTER HASKELL HINTON (1886-1980)
Fishermen. Cover for Outdoor Life, published August 1939. Oil on canvas mounted to backing board. 605x457 mm; 23 3/4x18 inches. Signed "Walter Haskell Hinton" in lower left image. Framed. A printed copy of the magazine accompanies the lot. See condition report.

Condition:

Painting could use restoration and was seen by restorer Jill Pratzon in March 2021.

Upper portion of canvas suffered some water damage at some point, leaving it pulled from the backing board. There was an attempt to "wipe" that upper sky area clean, (which affected the paint), and to reattach to the board.
Small discoloration to right of canoe. Other minor scattered discolorations to sky. No in-painting or over-painting performed as evidenced in the following blacklight images.

Restoration recommendation report: There is still enough paint on the surface (it wasn't totally removed), so she would be able to blend the sky and make that transition more gradual after a cleaning. She would need to remove the canvas from the backing, which is bowed, and to relax those hardened wrinkles along the upper edge before restretching it on bars.

Frame: some frame abrasion to extreme edges. Frame has some nicks.
