Sale 2556 - Lot 78
Flappers. Two charming illustrations for unknown publication. Pen, ink, and watercolor on board. 254x331 mm; 10x13 inches, on 11 3/4x16-inch board. Signed "John Held Jr." in lower center, between images. Matted with simple wood frame.
Provenance: Ursula Hanlon, New York (possibly purchased from/or gift of the artist, 1930s); thence by descent through daughter Claire Hanlon Brown to current family collection.
Condition:
Board is unevenly toned with chips to edges. Approximately 5½-inch crack to board in right margin, which does not seem to affect artwork's stability. Scattered discolorations and markings within image area with some minor surface abrasions at lower center. Another minor abrasion above the right shoulder and near right arm of figure on left, mostly visible in raking light. Verso has dampstaining, which does not appear to affect recto. Indistinct writing on verso (possibly by another hand). Possible transcription: "1/2 gold/over dull/blk map/2-2-2-2 1/4." Taped to window matte and framed.
